Hand Gun
Hand guns are one of our favorite toys as children. The problem is that guns are not toys and are one of the leading cause of death in adult males and anyone unlucky enough to be around drive by gang shootings. Many people are killed by stray bullets, even if they were fired just to scare someone. For some reason wild shots that are fired even in large open areas will always seem to hit someone, and often it is children. If you live in a US town with a population more than 500 chances are you have had or know someone who has had some experience with a gun or firearms accident.
Guns Don't Kill People, Bullets Kill People
The right of individuals to own handguns is granted under the second amendment part of the U.S. constitution. Laws that control how handguns are carried is the right of state governments, and open carry of handguns is sometimes allowed, just like it was in the old West. Most states now allow some form of hidden or concealed carry by citizens with training or other requirements. Some shall-issue states require the issue of permits only if there is no serious reason not to allow a permit such as a prior convictions, restraining orders, or a mental illness history. If a person cannot obtain a concealed weapons permit once training requirements are met, that person also cannot lawfully own a firearm. May-issue states may deny a permit at the discretion of local law enforcement. A person must be 21 years of age to purchase handguns or any ammunition for a handgun from a federally licensed dealer which is thankfully a higher age requirement for rifles and shotguns.
